This area was previously utilized as a waste disposal site for the local municipality, located near the ocean. Although the landfill was shut down in the 1960s, the waste was not fully cleaned up. Over time, the waves of the ocean have repeatedly battered and smoothed the fragments of the refuse into beautiful, iridescent “sea glass”. The glass comes in a variety of colors, including green, blue, red, orange, brown, and clear.
For multiple years, groups of tourists have regularly visited this location to collect sea crystals to take with them. Many people believe that the source of sea glass here is infinite. However, to preserve this unique landscape, the authorities eventually took action and completely prohibited the collection of sea glass. Glass Beach also offers an array of beautiful seashells, perfect to bring back as mementos.
Visiting Glass Beach is free, with no entrance or parking fees required.
