The 1,161 kg pumpkin of gardener Travis Gienger of Anoka, Minnesota has become the largest fruit in American history. People named this giant pumpkin Maverick in honor of Tom Cruise’s character in the Top Gun movies.
The pumpkin broke the US record for size, winning the championship in the annual pumpkin competition in Half Moon Bay, California.
Travis Gienger said: “It was fun to win this year’s giant pumpkin. Mid-year in Minnesota was great, but come spring we had a lot of trouble. So here’s the celebration. This record is unbelievable, like I just won the Tour de France.”
Travis Gienger carried the giant pumpkin in 35 hours to the contest location and had to go through a blizzard.
Gienger’s giant pumpkin did not happen by chance, he has carefully cultivated, shared his experiences and swapped special seeds.
Every year, he tries to push the size of the pumpkins he grows as large as possible. It is known that the Maverick pumpkin seeds taken from the giant fruit have created the Guinness World Record of the gardener from Italy.
